Find a good shop that works on rears and let them do it. Not a DIY for someone asking for hints.

a rearend build isn't really a biggy if your mechanically inclined. the trick is you have to pay special attention to your spacers and make sure they go back exactly like they came out. they will look the same but, they aren't . if your not acustomed to adjusting gears by feel you need to get magnetic dial indicator to adjust your backlash. backlash is the amount of clearance between the ring-and-pinion teeth. if there isn't enough backlash you will burn your gears up. too much and your rearend will whine. suitable backlash is between 0.005 and 0.009 of an inch. you should be able to feel the slighest slack when turning the ring gear back and forth. when replacing the pinion gear make sure to use the spacer from the old pinion. that will give you proper depth. make sure to use a brand new crush sleeve. becareful removing the pinion rod bolt ( rod between the axles ) as it is very easy to round off. good luck. sick

Do not install the crush sleeve until you do your final setup. leave the pinion seal and crush sleave out during setup and once you nail down your pinion depth, backlash and pattern then blow it all apart and install your crush sleeve and seal. Pinion bearing preload is crittical, it cant be more than 18 inlbs on a torquemeter any more than that and you will cook the pinion bearings it takes about 180ftlbs to begin to crush the sleeve. Also, Check the pinion gear for any etched markings, some gears are prepatterned and the checking distance will be marked on the pinion gear. If it reads + or - .005 , for example, then that indicates the pinion depth either increases or decreases from your cheking distance. Since your changing the carrier the case shims that come out more than likely will not go back in the kit should come with adjustable shim packs, it's better to use those cuase it gives you more flexability when setting backlash. 10 bolts are pretty easy, especialy if you're not changing ratios. Just watch your pattern it will tell you what to do and proper pinion and carrier preload are a must otherwise you'll be good to go.
