I have a samll 307 in my 69 camaro. The bottom end is stock but I have put a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, 600 CFM carb, .480 lift Comp Cam, and Full headers and 2 1/2 exhaust with 40 series flowmasters. It sounds mean but is lacking above 5000 RPMs. It still pulls but I think my heads are holding me ack. So, would a set of 2.02 aluminum heads be to much for the bottom end? As far as i know the motor has never been rebuilt and I have 60,000 miles on the car. Id also throw in a larger cam and 3.73 gears if I get the heads. I was thinking Edelbrock RPM.

Oh, I plan on building a 383 for the car in a few years and would probably reuse the heads, intake, etc.

 

If I get a set of Performer RPM heads by edelbrock or Trick Flow Aluminum heads what is a resonable est. on Hp increase. I currently have stock cast iron 1.94 heads.

I did some more digging and it turns out I am wrong. I know that the 307 is a 283 block with a 327 crank. The block has a bore of 3.875 or something close to that. I know I can order heads for a 283 and the will bolt up with no problems but that leaves me limited for future bottom end building. So, my question is, can I use heads designed for 4 inch bores (302, 327, 350, etc.) on this block? If so, what size chambers should I get to keep my compression up? So, if you have any experience with 307s or 283s I would be greatful if you would share some knowledge on the subject.

I believe the heads that are on the car are 1.72 intake and 1.50 exhaust, something wierd, and the cam (.480 lift) I have in it is to large for those heads. Thats why I would like to get some 1.94 or 2.02 heads with 170cc to 190cc intake runners. Any comments welcome.

EDIT- I found out the 307 used 75cc chambers. Should I use the same size with 4 inch bore heads or go to 64cc?

 

When you shop for heads, they are just going to be for small block or big block applications. Look for something that will provide the flow at the RPM you are loking for. GM vortecs are a great deal and provide lots of flow and good chamber design. They also have all the accessory holes.

Do yourself a favor and save your money towards the 383. The 307 was never meant to be a performance motor and swapping heads on any motor with 60000 miles and doing nothing else ( rings, bearings, etc.. ) is not wise. You are doing well if you getting an honest 5000 rpm on that motor considering it's age and mileage. No disrespect intended here, just advice from a 50 year old chevy guy who's been there.
