View Full Version : Dual Exhaust 97_Z28 03-06-2005, 06:58 PM I own a 1997 Camaro Z28. I want to put a new dual exhaust system on it, but there is not much room on the drivers side to on the exhaust pipe. Any Suggestions on how to that? nj85z28 03-07-2005, 12:59 AM just get a single inlet dual outlet muffler DarkBirdZ28 03-10-2005, 12:53 PM well what alot of the pro street cars do is the run the true duals down the same path as the stock exaust system. nj85z28 03-11-2005, 02:31 PM its illegal to have true duals on a street car unless it came from the factory like that z28srule 03-29-2005, 07:34 PM bull sh*t i put duals on my 85 z28 and it was leagle allthough it cost 1200 bucks {come on man, you know the rules about the language here} DarkBirdZ28 03-30-2005, 09:53 AM hahaha. its not cheap. you really have to know some one to net get ripped off. nj85z28 03-31-2005, 07:04 PM for 1200 you could have got some nasty parts for your motor. besides, i think true duals only put the horsepower up by like 10-15...you could have gotten heads and a cam and boosted up by like 60-75 Patrick 03-31-2005, 08:13 PM the problem with true duals is that if you dont have enough exhaust flow, you really dont need a huge dual exhaust system....if you had a big carb and intake setup, and heavily ported head and headers, then yes, you would need big exhaust,...but on a stock motor, especially for 1200 bucks...there is alot of stuff you can do first... and for the record...in some states, pennsylvania for one, it is illegal to have true dual exhaust if it was not so equipped from the factory. in pennsylvania, it is just plain illegal...some states allow it, but you have to have the same amount of toxic emissions from both pipes, so you often have to install a new CAT and new O2 sensors..so forth...but yet, in quite a few states, true duals, not a dual outlet muffler, is illegal. DarkBirdZ28 04-01-2005, 09:23 AM interesting... I didnt know that. your pretty smart man. Patrick 04-01-2005, 05:42 PM you didnt know what? darkbird? nj85z28 04-02-2005, 01:42 PM yes like here in New Jersey im almost positive its illegal Patrick 04-02-2005, 01:47 PM well, do you have state emissions NJ? basically, if your state follows federal emissions standards, then you cant have duals...[:@] nj85z28 04-02-2005, 02:03 PM dude we have one of the toughest emissions standards in the US i think. its all that Clean Air New Jersey Act, and the governer signed and passed all kindsa crazy laws Patrick 04-02-2005, 04:46 PM oh, ok, i wasnt sure...in that case, im sure you guys have the same BS laws about duals as we do...it really does suck. some guys have even gone so far in PA as to go before the state govt with cars that they have made exhaust systems with true duals, with complete double CAT systems....they proved that it flowed better than stock AND had LOWER emissions..and the crappy PA govt still said no. DarkBirdZ28 04-05-2005, 09:06 AM "you didnt know what? darkbird?" in some states, pennsylvania for one, it is illegal to have true dual exhaust if it was not so equipped from the factory. in pennsylvania, it is just plain illegal...some states allow it, but you have to have the same amount of toxic emissions from both pipes, so you often have to install a new CAT and new O2 sensors..so forth...but yet, in quite a few states, true duals, not a dual outlet muffler, is illegal. Patrick 04-05-2005, 11:23 AM oh..i gotcha...its a real pain... it used to be, so long as you drove your vehicle less than 5000 miles, you got an exemption sticker instead of an emissions sticker. well, the car that i take to the track is trailered everywhere, but it had tags and title, so once in a great while, i would drive it on the street...usually to shut up some mouthy kid in a mustang or ricer. because my car has true duals, and no cats, so it wouldnt pass the emissions test. but now, Just to get the exemption sticker, you have to pass a visual test, which means even if i "made" 2 cats to put on, i would have to convert back to single exhaust...its awful. and with 1 7/8 inch headers into a 3.5 inch collector and 4 inch flowmaster super comp race mufflers, its hard to convert back to stock exhaust...[:@] DarkBirdZ28 04-06-2005, 09:33 AM so have you scowered the US looking for the kind of KAT's that you need? I am sure somebody out there has something for that kinda exaust. Patrick 04-06-2005, 03:14 PM well, the problem is that PA doesnt even allow any alteration of the system..it has to be full appearance...if it is 1979 or newer...so i have a 500+ hp car just sitting on a trailer going to waste..[:o] DarkBirdZ28 04-08-2005, 09:43 AM lol well then all I can say is that sucks! well you can start upping the HP and make it a trailer queen for shows, y'know JD1969 06-03-2005, 05:15 PM Guys in Chicago run true duals all the time, and they are technically illegal here, but they most likley won't do anything to you. I have no cats on my car and it will pass emissions just fine (thank you LS1 Edit). There are always ways around these laws. If you want true duals look into the TSP (Texas Speed) system and have a local shop make you pipes that go under the axel if you do not want dumps. Here is a link to the pics of what I am talking about. http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=565907 Patrick 06-03-2005, 08:03 PM in pennsylvania, and several other states, you have to pass an OBDII, a tail pipe test, and a visual test....if you get caught in PA with a car without a cat or cats, the cop (if hes in a bad enough mood) can have the car towed as being "unsafe for public roadways"...also, you cannot get an inspection sticker without an emission sticker, and now the exhaust check, including the cat inspection, is part of the safety inspection JD1969 06-03-2005, 10:31 PM ORIGINAL: Patrick in pennsylvania, and several other states, you have to pass an OBDII, a tail pipe test, and a visual test....if you get caught in PA with a car without a cat or cats, the cop (if hes in a bad enough mood) can have the car towed as being "unsafe for public roadways"...also, you cannot get an inspection sticker without an emission sticker, and now the exhaust check, including the cat inspection, is part of the safety inspection That is 100% but true I was spraking about where I live, I don't know about other states. In Ill. if you have a 98 or newer OBD2 car they only do a scan test, if you don't through any codes you pass. For the older OBD1 cars they do a different test but I know a ton of guys who still pass. If you state is alot strickter get high flow cats, or better yet most states will have "show Car " waiver, I know ILL. has them. Patrick 06-03-2005, 10:39 PM PA used to have the waiver, but now, to get the waiver, you have to pass visual if your car is a 78 or newer... consider yourself lucky that you dont have to deal with that crap JD1969 06-03-2005, 11:13 PM Thats alright ILL. makes for it by doing all kinds of other stupid crap. Recently they doubled all the tolls if you don't have an IPASS Patrick 06-03-2005, 11:24 PM Pa is trying to pass a law against ANY exhaust modification...including louder mufflers...aftermarket catback..anything. nj85z28 06-03-2005, 11:27 PM yo try and pass inspection here in jersey....period!! ive owned about 18 cars and never passed the first time! even my new GTP failed for "moisture" in the headlight....wtf?? Patrick 06-03-2005, 11:49 PM yeah..i know that NJ is like PA with that crap... nj02z28ls1 08-09-2005, 09:38 PM anything is legal as long as it goes thru the cats and passes emmisions.(beside your local noise codes) go to 2in. or 2.5 in pipes and if your muffler guy is good it can tuck it up enough to fit. there is also a company out there that makes a 4in. system for the 93-02 f-body and you would not have to go thru that "bs" to make tru duals. if anyone wants the info on the 4 in. system give me a shout and i will post it.... aaronsirocz 08-10-2005, 01:05 AM YES TRUE DUALS IS KINDA HARD BUT ALOT OF LOCAL SHOPS CAN DEFINATELY DO IT, EMISSIONS IS VERY BAD HERE IN TX, AND I GOT STRAIGHT PIPE ALL THE WAY TO A ONE CHAMBER FLOW, AND THEY INSPECTED IT FOR ME THERE RIGHT AFTER THEY CUT THE CAT AND RAN THE PIPE FOR ME, SO IT HELPS TO KNOW SOME PEOPLE. 85Camarodude 09-12-2005, 11:39 PM in NC if ur car is older than 91 u dont have to pass emission they just give ur exhaust a look over to see if u have a cat and muffler unless it didnt come w/ it from factory when i had my glasspack on mine i made it so i could just clamp my cat into place for inspection then drop it after and put a pipe in its place......only problem is i would weld the pipe in after i passed and cut it back out everytime inspection came around nice and loud, i was happy : ) z28pete 09-13-2005, 01:04 AM There is really no need for dual exhaust except for looks. Two 2" exhaust pipes have a combined area of 6.28 squre inch, a single 3" pipe has a total area of 7.07 square inch. while a 4" pipe has an area of 12.56 square inches. A single 4" pipe will carry 4 time what a 2" pipe will. |
