I have a 89 Camaro RS with an aftermarket 350, but im pretty sure the intake is original. What i have looks like its a carb, but when i look into it a bit, there are wires and whatnot all over the top. Is this an early version of a throttle body or what? If i knew how to post pics i would, but i dont know how so im hopeing a description is enough. I know its not TPI, thats kinda obvious. If it is indeed a carb of some sort, could i put a 4 barrel carb on it?

It may may be a TBI from the little info given.

If as you say the engine was swapped out for a 350 and the car was a LO3 TBI 305. The easiest way would be to use the 305 intake, TBI and all the ECM & wring. One way to tell if its a Carb is all the sensors are not connected and nothing runs off the ECM. Or do some research so you know the DIFFERENCE between a Carb & TBI intake system.[sm=closed.gif]

if it has two bullet shaped things above the wholes, then it is TBI.

well i have no idea, black, thats why i was asking, like i said, it looks like a CARB, but it has the wires and whatnot on it. I could check to see if those wires are connected to anything yea, i never thought of that. And ill check for those bullet shaped objects you were talkin about. Thanks.
na, its none of them,,, btw, how did u get that pic up on there? If i knew how id put it up. Im by NO MEANS a mechanic, i know enough to get by and keep my things running, thats about it. But i love to talk about cars and learn about them soo hopefully one day ill be as smart about cars as others on here. But I really want to get some awesome power out of this thing. Ive got a new chip commin, headers and exhaust are being ordered next week probably, thinkin about a cam, and a new rear end cause i think this one is shot. ANYWAY,,, ive got a picture of the carb/tbi/Unidentified Intake Object. But ive seen it on other camaros of the generation so i know its not an aftermarket intake.

ok i think i got it on there now, if its there, thats a top shot of it while its still in the air cleaner houseing and all that jazz, engine was still hott so i didnt wanna take all that off, still burning the fingers. But those are the wires and the odd plastic things i was talkin about.
wow, alright thats WAY different than what im used to seeing. So could i put a cold air intake on that then? Being a throttle body?

i would personally spend my money on switching it over to carbureted. you would have ot buy a new intake manifold and carburetor, and destributor unless you already have a vacuum advance destributor. getting it done at some mechanic barely costs anything, the only money is buying a manifold, carb, and maybe a destributor.

gotcha, well my family is loaded with mechanics, so between all of them im sure i could get it done, i was thinkin about goin to a junk yard and finding a TPI cheap there and getting EVERYTHING involved with that if possible. Buy a rebuild kit and rebuild it all.

why a tpi? That is soooo much ecm work, you would need a ton of things done. I would just carb it.

i might end up doin that instead of. I can get a nice carb somewhat cheap(3 or 4 hundered0, might even get really lucky and be able to fit it onto the manifold that is there now just for now, if not, no big there either, they arent to expensive either. Im not lookin for a 8 second car here, just something to put them damn mustangs in there place, as i am already putten the ricers in theres....

i do have a new edelbrock 600 marine carb mechanical secondaries, and electric choke. all the parts are either rust proof or teflon coated. comes with everything a brand new edelbrock carb comes with, and it still looks new. 250 bucks and its yours. a 600cfm carb will give you awsome throttle response in a 350.
