I was just wondering what would be the best course of action for changing the gears in the rear end of my 1980 Z28? The rear is stock. So I didn't know if I can use the same housing and change just the gears, seals etc.. or do I have to buy a whole new rear end? I'm looking for the best cheapest way to get this done. Any help would be great.

not up on the 80 camaro but i think u have a 10 bolt rear end in it. if thats the case its easier to change the whole thing. what gears are in the car now? what are u looking to go to? auto or stick?

Ya I checked over the weekend. It's a 10 bolt rear. I believe it has the 3:09's. So I think 3:73's would make a difference. It's a 4 speed stick as well. Drum rear breaks.

373s are a good choise. will make a big difference. a 12 bolt rear would be best if u can find one for ur yr. not sure if they made them for an 80. i know i have to get a modified 12 bolt to put one in my 93. if u can find a good 10 bolt 373 it will work for u. would be a good time to change to rear disk brakes to.

I just pickup up a 12 bolt 3:73 rear out of a 1980 T/A. Do you think I will have any problems at the drag strip with this? I just want to make sure it will work and not get torn up. I thought Pontiac was stuff was stronger. I couldn't find a Posi so I will go with this for now. It was only $200 bucks. So it was a good deal.

I'm sorry I think it's a 10 bolt rear.

10 bolts are weak, so I wouldn't pull any 4000 rpm clutch drops if I were you.

If you're serious about drag racing, a true 12 bolt, or ford 9 inch are the best you can possibly do.

Ya I know the 12 bolts are stronger. They didn't make 12 bolts for 1980's Camaro/Firebirds. Any suggestions on where I could find one? I looked for about 2 months for a POSI 3:73 locally and couldn't find one. So I settled on the traction control 3:73 rear. We'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks. I got a baby girl coming in November so maybe I'll wait until next spring. Gotta save that cash.
