View Full Version : SS Question
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-09-2007, 06:36 PM What is the ONLY SURE WAY to find out if a camaro is a true SS?
Is it in the VIN? Naaaaaah, I checked..
Is it in the Data Plate...?
I need to know for a restoration I hope to assume very soon!
Thanks!
FE
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-09-2007, 07:20 PM Apparently, either everyone is sleeping or nobody knows...
frostlime69 11-09-2007, 07:58 PM For most collectors, the protecto plate &/or build sheet is what they look for. Waranty service records also help. The quickest way also for 69' modelsis that X codes(X55 =SS350), (X66 =SS396), (X22 =SS396)were used only on SS optioned Camaro's. X11could mean SS350 with Style TrimOR a base Camaronon SSwith Style Trim. A '69 SS required at least power front disc brakes among other things. L. A. built Camaro's did'nt use X codes which makes it more difficult to prove.

cplthomas 11-09-2007, 09:38 PM Protecto plate or build sheet.
Your trim tag might have some usefull info.
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 12:57 PM SOrry for being so curt, but I live in a NOW world and ususlly gota have answers quick...
THe data plate has the following...
O1C M135
ST 6712637 NOS 14416
TR 779Z L 2
E2MG
That's all the guy gave me over the phone...
cplthomas 11-10-2007, 01:16 PM Now we are getting somewhere. This is what the trim tag tells us....
built the 3rd week of Jan 1967 dont know about the 'M135'
Sort coupe/custom interior the 'NOS' is actually a 'NOR' and its the 14416th body built that year
Turquoise interior with custom buckett seats
All tinted windows, powerglide center console (tranny)
Doesn't say its an SS, then again doesn't say its not. Could be.
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 01:23 PM GREAT!
I need a '67 SS for a client very badly....
I need a job this winter and a big block'67 SS will fill that position nicely
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 01:36 PM Everything say's turquoise and stuff ... But the dash is showing a portion of a dark blue and the interior and exterior is GOLD, the seats are GOld and all that... and there aren't a lot of pics, and the owner is slow in responding...
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 02:08 PM I went to this site... http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-camaro-trim-tag-decode-1967.asp
There is nothing on the whole page stating wether a car was an SS or an RS... In fact I didn't even see the letters...
So is there another way to tell, or was it an option that didn't actually use the letters "SS" but a code of some sort?
Thanks!
P.S. This Camaro site rocks, the other camaro place I found camaros(dotnet) is full of insulting asses, that get pissed at you when you get insulted and defend yourself.. Plus they can't and didn't answer my question directly... I mean I got it answered but only that the car is not an "SS" due to the 4th position on the data plate being blank... Tha'ts and indirect answer but it don't tell me how to ID a true SS...
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 05:35 PM Here's a thought. Have there been any KNOWN SS camaros that had the 4th position on the Tag left blank?
One more thing. How does one discern the correct size motor?
frostlime69 11-10-2007, 05:37 PM Well I guess I should have asked what the year of car was that you were inquiring about. 67-68 years are not as easy to determine whether an SS or base car. Sorry about that.Build sheet, window sticker, etc would help greatly.
www.camaros.org/index.shtml (http://www.camaros.org/index.shtml)
This site might help.
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 05:53 PM Oooooh, sorry... I feel like a Tard myself!
It's a 67, made in late January of 67.

frostlime69 11-10-2007, 06:41 PM 67 is a great year. I am looking at a 67 RS vert 327 for $27k. Gotta sell some stuff 1st.
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 06:45 PM Yes, the 67 is nice, But, how does one tell an RS from an SS and how does one tell if it's IS an RS or an SS and what motor came in it?
frostlime69 11-10-2007, 07:00 PM Paper work. It's all that I would look for and from there figure out what it really is. Sounds like your car might not have stock drive train.
FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 07:18 PM Here's the Tag Picture.
What does this tell us?

FEandSneakinUpOnYa 11-10-2007, 07:33 PM According to one decode site this thing has a COnsole and a TH400 Tranny... Why in the heck would they put a TH400 behind a standard issue 6 cyl or 327? THey say that without a number on one of the blank fields that the engine would either be a 6 or a SB 327... THat don't make any sence to me with a TH400 and a 327...
What say's the populace?
