I have a 69 coupe, took to the local body shop. This guy does good work, but he quoted me 7000.00 to do under carriage and paint. This is with me stripping the car and putting all the stuff back on. He also said that this is the nicest pretty much rust free antique car he will have ever worked on. Everything is there and just minor surface rust in the typical places. He had the car for 3 weeks going over it for this estimate. What do you guys think.

JUST undercarriage? seems a bit steep to me.

I think he means the guy is gonna paint the entire car and do the undercarriage.

Yes he will paint the whole car, under carrige door jams detail engine compartment. But the 7000 would be me stripping the car of hardware and replacing it myself.

7000 isn't bad for a total cost. Its actuall a decent price, but he better do good work. No as far as you stripping the car down I don't know. He probably doesn't want to do it because its a 69, and he doesn't want to be responsible if he breaks something.
What color are you painting it?????

whoa, i work at abody shop, we have had vehicles in Chevy Rumble, Street Rodder, and Truckin magazines, as well as dupont award winner and a vehicle on a dupont calender, and our paint jobs, sanded and buffed, with some body work, will only run like4 grand, 4500 if the car is ultra rough, thats really high imo, and the jams, at our shop are a part of the job with a color change, thats kinda high but thats just me

Have you seen any of this guy's previous work. If it looksgreat, and his work has been recommended, then it would probably be worth it.

I have seen is work, he is very good when he puts his mind to it. Mine would be a specialty project for him. He does very well on these types of jobs. His every day stuff though is not up to my standards. He extremly busy with common body jobs.I thought it was too high, especially with me doing alot of work.

It is kinda high. Is this your first estimate? You should check out some other places too. Go to a few hot rod specialty restorationstores and hang around for a while and ask around on who does the best bang for your buck.

At our shop, that price would be about normal, IF it includes media blasting to bare metal inside and out. That means the interior would also be painted. I would be careful though if you are taking the car to a shop that does mostly collision work. Make sure to tell him up front the date you want the car back. Many shops will take on classic cars but do not realize the special handling they require. Stay in close contact with him too, especially to inspect the car after stripping the body down to metal. Even minor to moderate damage can greatly impact the final bill. Fianlly, begin the project knowing exactly what you expect when finished, right down to the type of paint and clearcoat, stripes, etc. Basically, no surprises for either of the parties involved.

I dont think his price includes media blasting and interior painting. I will check around. Any suggestion to take it too. I am in S. Fl. Marco Island. Naples is close then Ft Myers. Hope there are some good members in the business close to me. Would be nice to take to some one trusted here as well.

note to self: never take detailing advice from you
back on subject. $7000. doesn't sound bad at all, although I would be afraid if you don't really like his "everyday work". a quality guy/shop, takes pride in all the work he does, not just his "special projects". run away now before it is too late
don't forget one thing here. it's not really the paintjob you are paying the big money for, it's all the other stuff. if you pulled in with a brand new car and wanted a repaint, what would that cost? now think about how much more work you will need with your car? doesn't seem that high now does it?
