I would like to paint my engine, it dosent look too nice, and i would like to make it look better. Now ive been to a couple of auto shops (O'Riellys and NAPA) and they have engine paint there. Now I want to know about how to go about painting an engine, I know its a pain in the ass, but im willing to turn it into a lil project.

Can someone explain how this is done? Do i need to pull out everything attatched to the engine? If so, what parts and whatnot.

Any advice is welcome!

this is what i have to work with:

Very easy, first get the engine totally degreased, get it steam cleaned at a car wash, and then redo it with spray engine cleaner or oven cleaner, mask off what you don't want to get painted, and go at it. Don't try to do it one coat as it will wind up ugly, go with several light coats. If you are lucky the engine will still run after the cleaning. LOL

my engines are never really that dirty to begin with, so all I do is hit it with a wirewheel attatchment on the end of a hand-drill, sand the easily accessable areas with sandpaper and wipe down with lacquer thinner.

to paint I use a self-etching primer and then, as z28pete said, I use multiple thincoats to help with drying and even looking application. take your time and don't worry about seeing through the first coulple of coats
