View Full Version : $5000 to fix up my 69
jonnyNITRO 03-28-2007, 02:35 AM Hey! Just wanted to share my project. 1969 standard coupe, beat to death. I've set aside $5000 to fix it up.
I'm bolting up a '71 subframe and I just picked up a L98 corvette TPI and 700R4 tranny for $1400. And my buddy is filming the process for Low Budget Garage so if you are interested in how I do it... or if I can tune in.

74454bb 03-28-2007, 03:42 AM awsom keep us posted, this is some of the best stuff I've seen in awhile. Where are you guys from?
cplthomas 03-28-2007, 10:55 AM I will be watching. I am sure I will get more knowledge to help me with my 69.
jonnyNITRO 03-28-2007, 01:15 PM Thanks for the support!
I hope everyone can learn a little something from the videos.
We are both from So Cal
JRs72RS 03-28-2007, 09:20 PM Great work! About time someone does a realistic build show, not the high buck sponsored cars.
Keep it up.
Blade 03-29-2007, 01:53 PM johnny u got pictures of the other cars.
jonnyNITRO 03-29-2007, 02:01 PM I'll do that after I get back from work, tonight.
Blade 03-29-2007, 02:11 PM so r u trying to make a build with 5k?
jonnyNITRO 03-29-2007, 02:29 PM That's the plan. $5000 out of pocket. Of course, if I can turn around and sell some parts, that will add to the pot. I figure it's just additional surplus for the end-of-project rush.
For instance, I will be selling the '69 subframe for a few hundred and now that I have the corvette motor... (oops, that's not on the show yet.) I can sell my 454.
So the 5K comes out of my bank account. The rest will come from selling parts... like we all have to do.
In any case, I'm still being challenged as to finishing it for that amount.
My dad's neighbor just dropped 20K into his Nova and it's just a motor and body.
I just wanted to show people that you can fix up your car and have fun without buying every new part in the catalog. And you can save a TON of cash doing it yourself.
We can all learn from each other.
PS: I saw your '67. Very nice. Cool dog too.
cplthomas 03-29-2007, 02:33 PM Yeah man I am like 15 into my 69 and it is still sittin in the driveway.
Blade 03-29-2007, 02:36 PM lol thanks that lil mo fo takes everything u have laying around bolts, tools, parts. if it can fit in his month its his. Thanks the car is coming along slowly.
its can be done but its gonna be tuff.
what parts are u in need of?
74454bb 03-29-2007, 02:36 PM Why would you want to sell the 454??????
Blade 03-29-2007, 02:38 PM bc he got a vette motor. u gonna buy a real motor now?
jonnyNITRO 03-29-2007, 11:47 PM Matts01ES: I think that I'm still missing a shortened driveshaft and fan shroud. Of coure I might be running the electric fans like the vette does.
74454bb: I'm on a limited budget. I need the cash.
Matts01ES: You tell 'em. I should get close to 20mi/gal with the vette motor. Gas is $3.19 in my town... and it isn't even summertime yet!!!
74454bb 03-29-2007, 11:50 PM I hear ya, just thought it would have been a nice big block car. don't listen to matt, hes a big block man to.
jonnyNITRO 03-30-2007, 12:08 AM Hey, I'm not upset.
Sooner or later, I'll drop a big block into one of my cars.
I've already got plans to do a '71 and another '69 after this one.
I'll need more money first.
Blade 03-30-2007, 11:10 AM johnny let me know when ur ready for electric fan idea. I am part of camaros.net and there a group buy thing over there on that site and the company has them ready when ever.
jonnyNITRO 03-30-2007, 01:04 PM Thanks Matts01ES. I will. I'm looking at summertime for the motor install.
Blade 03-30-2007, 02:23 PM i have time trust me nothing but time. get the hint
jonnyNITRO 04-02-2007, 07:27 PM And that's good. No sense in rushing things.
Sometimes I find that switching to another part of the car when I'm burned-out or my funds are low can help my motivation.
Or I look at my concept sketches and think.... someday.
Blade 04-02-2007, 08:57 PM just come on here post a lot and then go back to the car
jonnyNITRO 04-04-2007, 07:41 PM I have been. But, I'm not burned-out yet. Wait 'till summer. I picked up some new bushings and ball joints for the front end today. I love the polyurethane stuff. They're installed and now I'm looking at 2" drop spindles and tierods to finish it up, painting along the way.
I'm still waffling over the design. Maybe I'm post some picts and get some feedback.
Well, back to work. Have to strip the paint off my front fenders and pull the pistons from my new motor.
Blade 04-05-2007, 09:46 AM where are u getting the drop spindles from?
jonnyNITRO 04-05-2007, 01:56 PM I don't know.
I'll begin to research it this weekend.
Blade 04-05-2007, 02:01 PM checkeredracing.com
that is where i bought the subframe u can find them there.
jonnyNITRO 04-05-2007, 03:02 PM I'll check it out, thanks.
jonnyNITRO 04-05-2007, 03:06 PM Except for thier bolt-in subframes, I couldn't find any drop spindles on the site. (Poor navigation)
Blade 04-05-2007, 03:12 PM did u try calling everything might not be on the site.
jonnyNITRO 04-05-2007, 03:31 PM This is what I found. I think I'll go with the Heidt's. It's inbetween as far as price and they've gotten great reviews.
They look stronger too. The higher (1.5") ball joint mount should help.
Blade 04-05-2007, 03:34 PM cool. lets us know!
jonnyNITRO 04-06-2007, 12:15 AM Hey ! When did you change your username?
And by-the-way, your avatar scares my wife.
Blade 04-06-2007, 12:17 AM blade is a nickname from work
as for the avatar dont like voodoo
jonnyNITRO 04-09-2007, 07:11 PM I TRY TO AVOID IT WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
Hows' your front clip coming along? Do you have your motor already (Blown BB, etc.)
Blade 04-09-2007, 08:35 PM yes motor been ready. just waiting on getting the sub put on
jonnyNITRO 04-11-2007, 02:33 PM Have you fired it up yet?
I can't wait to fire up my corvette motor. Just have to strip all the smog equuipment first and rewire the whole thing.
Here's a pict of it... and an old GMC 451 blower I have sitting around. Might as well sell that too.
74454bb 04-11-2007, 02:39 PM I love the look of those motors, almost as nice as the good old carb ones.........off to watch part 4
jonnyNITRO 04-14-2007, 05:34 PM I'm excited to tear that engine apart. Nearly everything is alluminum! The block is covered in oil, so I don't know what to expect yet. Lots of Simple Green and a pressure washer should do the trick. Tomorrow's the day, during filming.
cplthomas 04-14-2007, 07:30 PM Thats alot of aluminum for this trick, I use oven off, oven cleaner. Gots it all in one shot, I think it would play havok on the aluminum though.
1969 SS 04-17-2007, 03:16 PM I am really interested on how you ar egoing to "bolt in" the newer frame
