Default Modifying a 3.4 Camaro V6

There are several ways to upgrade the performance of a 4th gen 60 degree V6 Camaro, depending on how much you want to get out of it, without power adders such a nitrous or forced induction. Here is a list of things that can be done.

1) The simplest and most economical would be a cold air intake (CAI), a good exhaust system (headers and cat back), 160 deg themostat, and a PCM tune.

2) A little more agressive would be all of the above, plus a bigger cam, head and intake manifold porting, and lower rear end gears to take advantage of the cam.

3) Most agressive, includes all of the above plus head and intake manifold changes.
GM has as done a lot of work on the 60 degree V6, but only for the front drive cars. Adapting the whole front drive engine can be done, but it is going to take a lot of fabrication work because the block was designed to be mounted sideways. The front drive engine was changed to use a roller cam, but this upgrade was not done to the rear drive block, so youare stuck with flat tappets However; there are some parts that can be used on the rear drive engine, these include the heads, roller rockers, and intake manifolds. The heads, and intake manifolds from late model 3400 desgnation "W" car engine will bolt up to Camaro 3.4 engine and give a substantial power boost. The heads are aluminum and use canted valves for better breathing, and roller rockers for less friction. The intake manifold has a large plenum and larger runners. If you want, you can easily adapt the throttle body from a 4.9 Chevy v6 for some additional power. The one problem with this set up is thst you wind up with a very high compression ratio (around 13:1) unless the pistons are changed. This is not really a bad thing, but you must use a cam with a very long duration to blow off some of the compression at low RPM. Premium fuel is a must. This will make good top end power and pull good up to 7000 RPM. Properly tuned, 1/4 mile times with ETs in mid to high 14s, and 91 to 95 MPH trap speed are possible with an auto transmission, and a little quicker and faster witn a 5 speed.

4) But if you really want to make the car move, Swap in a V8

True about that getting the V8, but getting that fast with V6 with straight engine is good next I would go turbo or supercharge. for the second step

I mean the Ls1 kit is 7000 I think, might be cheaper or more.................... http://ftpp.net/V6Main.htm is an kool place v6 guys , = - )

what about the thermostat...whats the stock thermo in the 3.4L and would a 180deg be better? Does a thermo actually add hp, or does it just keep things running smoothly? Also, is jet the best performance chip for this car and would it make any real noticeable difference? I heard something about superchips being better but I don't know =). Oh....almost forgot....would I need a shop to install either of these things?

One guy I know of so far....

Russell from fullthrottlev6.com:

As for thermostats, well, you need a chip to optimize that tweak...but, the 3.4L computer can not be tuned in that manner, much less any widely available manner now.

OBD 1.5 = doozie.

What would you suggest for bigger cams?
