If you had put a question in the thread title instead of a simple "I'm back", you may have gotten more traffic on the issue, and been able to avoid having a hissy fit. Just sayin!

I was gonna do the cai and ill get pics of it when i get it home. Does anyone know if there is any difference between the base 3.8 and the rs or is it just cosmetic appearence. Not sure about a supercharger lol and the cat will you get more gain with a free flow cat or no cat cause where i live they dont do emission test thanks for the feed back

its just appearance gm made the RS 96-97 and slp did it 01-02. there was no rs 3.4, nor was thee gfx's offered before 96. In 98 it became the sport appearance package for both the v6 and V8.

If it is a early 3800 then headers are a nice upgrade. Yes you can install them yourself. I do think you will have to jack the car up pretty high but no where near as high as you would if you where doing long tubes on a V8. You will need a way to cut the factory Y-pipe a the cat to make it fit. You can gut the original Cat if you do not need it for emission. Just jam a long screw driver through it and break it up inside. Once the pcs inside are small enough the will just fall out the other end.
Factory Cat connected to stainless Y pipe.
The only real risk is if the exhaust manifold bolt break off in the head. I really like my Stainless OBX. I have had them on for 5 years and 90,000 miles with no issues. If I was doing it over I would get the OBX stainless Cat back also.
Like with all older cars change and flush the coolant unless the car came with maintenance records that show it has been done in the last 3-4 years. The only real weak spots on the 3800 are the intake and head gaskets. Both of those can be weaken by bad coolant.
I use the cheap ebay CAI. I like the one that completely leaves the engine compartment. I think I paid $35 for it. If you plan a racing the car you should get a better one. I am told they will starve a 3800 going over 5500 RPMs. I have another car to "play" with I have no plans of running my daily drive over 5K. I am getting 30-31 MPG on the highway in summer driving. 27-28 winter.
