Just a heads up, most undercoating guy know how to undercoat a new car but know a lot less about stopping existing rust.

Rust should first be converted to black oxide then sealed. There are products out there that are designed to just that. Converting ferrous oxide (rust) to black oxide is a simple process. Ferrous oxide will continue to grow if you cover it. It has moisture in it and it can/will break the seal of most coating allowing more moisture in. Black oxide does not grow. If you have a set of allen wrenches they are most likely coated in black oxide.

Eastwood Rust Converter | Rust Converters | Auto Rust Converter

Once you convert the rust then you can apply a sealer/paint/undercoating. Just like your allen wrenches black oxide will convert back to rust if there is enough water around.

The only type of product I am aware of that is one step is a product like Por-15. It is thick and seals out moisture and it strong enough the rust can not break through it. If I had to compare it to something I would say it is a lot like a roll on bed liner.

Hey thanks for that link! I will order that stuff when I get the car, apply it when I store it and either paint over or undercoat the car at that time.

Thanks for info so far guys. I can tell this forum is going to be a great help to me through out my ownership life of this car. Wait until you see the the pics and whats been done. This car is awesome.

how much did you pay ? for the car like the hood , i am glad that i did not just use the can of stuff i got an i also made sure he used his product ,an did it like gorn explains ,nice thing is it can be checked each year if needs it again ,then like he said wil propbley outlast the car ,as long as you store an it an dont drive it in the snow,i would not judge one of the best cars of its time ,the 5.0 mustang ,raced one in 1977 edldorado was fast car at 1 8/th mile he started pulling away the caddy was fast for being so big an heavy an has 425ci an some of those 5.0 of the 80s are gaining value an hard to beat when they hope them up there so light ,i like anything with an engine ,an did not have one ford let me down ,just the last 8 years been chevy guy ,GMC trucks i dont like ,they all the car makers have atleast one car i would own most, for me mustangs just got less head room for a tall guy an are shorter ,i like the looks of there ,thoug that one was pretty sharp ,what did you do with it ,?an what year was it guess 92 ,i near bought a 2008 with 4.6 ,brand new when i got the 95 z28 ,was 20.000 cash in 09 nice part was it was gt look alike ,there holding there value pretty well

POR15 is tough. Like Gorn said, make sure you convert the rust first. Krylon makes a cool "Zinc Rich" paint that I've used that does very well on preventing and disposing of existing rust. Runs $9 a can though. If you don't use POR15, don't get regular undercoating. Spend the extra dough and spray the underneath with truck bed liner. Lasts much longer is much tougher.

What did i pay for the camaro? Around 5 grand plus the parts and labor for,new rear brakes. The car is modified to the point that its pushing 450 at the rear wheels. 37k on a gm rebuild. All naturally aspired mods. Will have list soon. Ford rear end, port and polished lt4 heads, 3 inch header back exhaust, gm hot cam w programmer, bunch of fuel system mods and suspension mods are what sticks out in my head. Car is a sleeper.

As far as the rust goes, im gonna try the wire brush thing...then the product in the link provided earlier. Then some kind of hd end product to prevent more from coming back.

well you say sleeper but most will see the ram air hood slp headers ,an know you got something ,a speeper is v6 ,with lsx engine in it ,an a camery with a ls7 engine with 1000hp,no sleeper there ,is that a dealer ,or private sale,be careful if was dealer who ever built it ,did it to get on it ,but it alll sound good for a car with that kinda miles,an you may want to be careful with that kind power

It does have a V-6 style exhaust . Def doesn't sound like it. And from a quick look, there is nothing that screams fast car(maybe the hood tips off gear heads like us). Needs a nos sticker is what it needs

I work for the dealer who took it in on trade. I provided the previous owner(who bought it new) with Financing on his new car.

He is a 72 year old engineer who ordered the car brand new. I have receipts for all the work that he did along with various specialists in the area that did the work that he did not do. The tech that I had to the UCI (used car inspection) is a NHRA top fuel racer as well as a certified world GM tech. Other than the little bit of rust underneath...the car is the real deal.

I appreciate the concern and it is welcomed! In my 13 years in the car business (Im 32 now, started at 19 in sales) I've driven Supercars, customer hot rods...Tee-buckets, even MGs w wooden rear ends lol. I know to respect cars with power... a lesson Ive learned the hard way...sad but true.
