Default Fuel Gauge Reads Improperly

Okay so I filled my car up the other day and it showed more than full on my gauge. Which it usually shows jist a little above full but never quite this far. It didn't drop below the full mark until I put 200 miles on the tank and then it started dropping. By the time I had 250 miles on the tank, it was dying because it was flat empty and it showed about an 1/8 of a tank on the gauge. It just started doing this and used to be fairly accurate. Just wanting to know what I need to do to fix this. Thanks in advance!

lol, sounds like it started working normal. jk. mine comes down to the full mark at just over 100 miles. and it dies when it touches the e line. i did bend the arm a little when i replaced the fuel pump to get it to e. could be in the sending unit. test it.

That is how GM fuel gauges work. You get super fuel mileage for the first 100 miles after filling up, then gets worse and worse as you drive.

Usually it takes about 80 miles to drop off full. Now it's taking 200...

And it will probably be empty at the 1/4 mark. Learned that by running out of gas.

That's why I base my fuel off of the trip meter. I know I'm due for gas in the red camaro around 190 or so miles. The black one should net a bit higher being a M6

The sending unit went wacko. If it stays consistent, just pretend waay full is full and 1/8 is empty. To me, the needle being off whack wouldn't be worth the archeological dig required to get into the tank.

that happens with my 95 ,when it happen the first time i was near some gas ,but since the day i got it was the only thing wrong with it ,just runs out at 1 8/th ,so now i allways gas up at 1 4/th of a tank ,so it could be commen ,i drove with a 2 gallons with me for a bit till i knew for sure ,i did not feel. the need to fix it ,just that E is at 1 8/th an 1 4/th put in gas goes right up over full ,been like that for 9 years, unless it stops working i would just figure thats the case as time goe.s on they dont read 100% anymore ,i .put 30.00 in at just.above a 1 4 /th allways no problem since ,an since my engine swap was the only gauge that still worked ,though now i got a new set of guages ,not the gas one though

I have 3 different sending units in my 96 and they were all off. I ran out when it hit E but I think from 1/8 tank to E was less than a gallon. The needle did not pass the F till I was almost ½ a tank buy miles. This held the same for all three sending units. I wonder if it is the gage?

Was there change in fuel tanks to the later 4th gens? My 2000 seems to work. It is off F in the first 60 miles and if it is at 3/8 tank it takes about 11 gallons to fill it up. Based on a 15.5 gallon tank that pretty close.
