Default 2002 Firebird, Axle noise, Whine?

Here is a short video of my 02 firebird, 3.8L.
I know the quality is not great but maybe somebody will have an idea of where this noise is coming from.
Seems like the rear passenger. a whining sound between 50-60 mph.
Only whines when under acceleration. Seems to go away on left turns.

Could it be U joints? It is weird that it only happens under acceleration.

I never heard a u-joint sound like that. If I had to guess based on the video I would guess pinion bearing but it could be a differential bearing also.

A vibration app on a smart phone should be able to give you the harmonic of the noise. Note the harmonics and the speed you are going and do the math to see what is turning at that speed. Course in either case the cheapest way to repair the car is to just replace the whole rear with a used one, unless you know how to rebuild a rear.

OK, I am just afraid of buying a used rear end and going through all that work just to get another one with problems.

That's a gear whine I'm hearing. Gear whine during straight line acceleration usually means the pinion gear isn't set deep enough into the ring gear. If this is a recent development (didn't make noise before), then suspect either worn ring & pinion gears, or worn carrier and pinion bearings causing a poor gear mesh/alignment. Just for fun, have you checked the oil level?

I just got the car so not sure how long its been whining. 140,000 miles on it.
I did check the oil and its full. Will replacing the oil help at all?
Thanks
