Default 87 electrical issue?

Okay first off my camaro is an 87...well at least most of it. Its got a 350 crate motor unsure exactly what year, none of the computer/brain in hooked up to anything. Don't ask how but it works, has for several years. Two problems 1 smaller issue in order to see how much gas I have I have to turn on the headlights. 2 the real problem issue...my car overheats like a lot of them but after I got home yesterday I was letting it idle to cool down and had the heater on high cuz that always helps. It wasnt blowing [heater] like normal and the car would start to idle like crap and as soon as it did the heater would blow normally the idle would pick up/act normal and the heater would stop blowing as hard. how would the idle and the blower for the heater be linked. Any ideas
?

The idle and blower are somewhat related......There is a vacuum source needed to allow you to have heat from other areas aside from defrost. Defrost is the default position, so if you have a vacuum leak with very poor idle, I can see there being an issue there. As far as gas gauge/headlight problems....it sounds like you need to go through and verify all wiring. All of the 87 (non berlinetta) gauges are sending unit style and have nothing to do with the computer at all. Good luck

Thanks for the input. I knew I would end up having to check all the wiring was just hoping to avoid it or at least delay it.lol
