Default Turbo 350 Tranny stuck in 3rd

Hey guys, so heres my issue. I have a 82 iroc with a 350 in it. It also has a turbo 350 tranny in it. The other day I was driving down the road with a buddy and layed the throttle down to the floor. Motor revved up real high and all of a sudden it kicked into 2nd for a quick second then chirped into 3rd. After I did this I tried putting it into 2nd and 1st gear and neither of them will work. If I put it into either of those gears I can sit there in one spot and push the throttle all the way to the floor and it doesnt want to go anywhere. Especially in 1st. In first it almost feels like its trying to go forward and backwards and the same time. Dropped my pan out this morning to find tranny fluid pitch black. Found what I believe to be pieces of burnt out clutch in the bottom of the pan. (Its either that or just tranny fluid sludge from being in there for so long.) I believe I may have smoked my clutch in my torque converter. I know its not my linkage and believe that it is not my vacuum line either because all lines are connected. Anyone had a similar experience with their turbo 350? Any ideas on what I could try before I go out and get a whole new tranny and torque converter? Thanks.

I doubt you have torque converter clutch. Torque converter clutches are for fuel mileage, I assume since you car is not stock no one added the electrons needed to make a torque converter clutch work. I am sure someone will correct me but I do not think 3 speed automatics ever had clutches in the torque converter.

Even If you had a torque converter clutch and it failed it would not cause a major issue.

I would bet money your trans is fried. You descried a text book example or the one two clutch pack blowing out.

This is a Camaro tech sight so FYI GM first Iroc Z28 was in 1985. You 82 is not an Iroc

Correct.....Unless it is a very, very early pre-production model of 1985 IROC-Z28.

Or it may not even be an '82 Camaro. That or someone added the decals to the car. Either way, your trans is defiantly toast. Trans fluid should be a pink to red in color. Anything dark is burnt fluid. Good time to find a 700R4 and swap it in. Then you can have overddrive. Or find another TH350 as they are fairly easy to find and cheap. Rebuilds aren't bad on them either.

What's the difference between a 700r4 and a th350? I'm gonna guess a th350 has more torque and the 700r4 is better for top speed?

Engines have torque transmission have gearing. There are varying gearing for both the 700R4 (4 speeds) and the TH350(3 speed). The 700r4 is a TH350 with overdrive. Overdrive is basically for fuel mileage. Think of it as a highway gear. Other then that the trans are the same.

If your car was all original (and a z28) you would have a computer controlled 305 with a 200c metric transmission. The 82 Z had an option of the cross fire fuel injection.
Someone has changed just about everything on your car. I remember driving one of the first Iroc to hit PA. I was a GM mechanic and we had to drive all new cars before anyone else to make sure everything was fine. I owned an 82 Camaro at the time I drove the one of the first Irocs So when I say your 82 is not a Iroc it is not because of something I read

The main difference is slight gearing differences and overall case length, and the additional gear. Other than that, like Gorn said, they are close to being the same.

The below link gives a good description of the of the 700R4. I like how they say pre 87 versions had some glitches. Wow is that an understatement. The early L98's where ripping them a part like they where made of paper mashie. As long as the 700R4 has been rebuilt even the pre 87s would be fine.

Okay guys found a TH350 from a buddy who says it's got heavier duty gears and 10k on it. Getting ready to pull the tranny this week. Anyone have any tips or things I should know before I do it? Gonna be my first tranny pull outta a Camaro
