Train my eyes to differentiate between a 305 and 350!

St. Ebony took my suggestion. The VIN will tell you what the CAME with, but there's no guarantee that it wasn't changed at some point. Which is another reason to go for a car that was in a bad wreck, since it is less likely that they changed the motor in it. And, chances are they would swap in a 350 if anything so if it's a 350 VIN code it will probably have a 350 in it still.

Thanks for all your help guys. I just got back from the junk yard and I couldn't find anything that was 100% for sure a 350.
"sometimes there is a casting number on the underside of the block under the exhaust manifold"
I saw a couple that had 638 casted on the block where the 305 or 350 should be. Could this tell me what size engine it is?

This should help you out a bit: http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-ca...oding-help.asp
And these guidelines aren't specific to Camaro's only, it also goes for Chevy engines in general.

Well I ended up picking up a 350 today. Thanks a lot guys. The tips helped a lot. I ended up picking up a "Roller or flat tappet cam one-piece rear seal" (Casting # 14093638). It had no intake manifold, throttle body, valve covers or the wheels on the front for the serpentine (dunno what to call them) but it was only $140 after a 30 day warranty. Now I need to buy a cherry picker so I can mount it on my engine stand.
