1990 was the last year for the Iroc, After that there is just Z28's. It is funny when you think about it. 3rd and 4th gen Camaros are opposites on how you shop.
With a 4th gen Z28 it does not matter if you get a base model Z or a SS its the same LS1 engine. As a general rule new equals better. 98s aren't terrible but if you have a choice get a 2000 or newer one. So SS is pretty much a cosmic thing although SLP did offer options the factory did not. Most options where simple bolt on things anyone could do in their driveway. SS was bragging right but made little difference stop light to stop light.
In the 3rd gen the Z28 or even the Iroc did not mean much. You could get a weak 305 in the iroc only slightly more powerful then the base model coup. With the 3rd gen you want to look for the L98 350 version. Its still a Iroc or a Z28 but it is a much high torque and much stronger motor. Example: in 1988 Iroc had LO3 (170 Hp) the LB9 (230HP) and the L98 (240hp). On paper the (LB9:305) and (L98:350) are very close but take it from someone that drove both cars on the same day when they where new there is no way there is only 5 foot lbs of torque difference. GM was not pushing the 350 because they where only allowed to sell so many due to MPG average requirements at that time. Also the TPI 305's had a bad habit of stretching rods and requiring crank kits even while under warranty. The 350 where rock solid.
If you want to go fast the 4th gen Ls1 will run circles around the L98 3rd gen if both cars are stock.
