Guys, my 350 has developed a nasty lifter knock. I purchased the engine second hand so I dont know if it has solid or hydraulic lifters in it. The motor is originally from a 1977 truck of some sort. Thats about all I can add, except a picture of the motor with the intake removed. I dont know what a solid lifter setup looks like, so maybe somebody can tell me.....

ARGH! That never works!

 

Most likely hydraulic. They require no maintence so the factory puts them in. Just the high rpm engines will use solid. Can you push down any on the push rod?

 

I havnt even pulled the valve covers yet. After my whole oil from the breather incident I replaced the PCV valve and drove her home. About 1/2 way home I noticed a lifter knock. The dipstick says she is full, but I dont know if it is the correct dipstick (and after all that oil I lost thru the breather....) I plan on running an engine flush and then replacing the oil with 5 fresh quarts of oil. My old Mopar would clatter like hell if I got a quart low. Ive also got a blown collector gasket and was wondering if that could be contributing to the knock in some way...(although I doubt it...)

 

You may be hearing the collector gasket leak. Its an easier fix to start with.

 

100% certain there is also a lifter knock. Collector goes puffpuffpuff. Lifters go clack clack clack. The wheels on the bus go round and round.......

Im gonna fix the collector and change the oil. Maybe Ill get a better ear for the lifter knock.

 

A leaking exhaust goes tickticktick. Maybe you don't have a lifter pumping up.
If you can put a long screwdriver to your ear, The handle side, and touch around the engine with the other end and the noise will travel through it and you can find where its loudest. You can also use a piece of hose

 

Yeah, but don't use an old heater hose, really gunks up your ear. LOL

ID tell my wife I was 'tuning the car by ear'............Im almost certain that the lifter noise and collector noise are different, but Ill start with the collector. I REALLY dont wanna pull the intake off any time soon.

SO, do you guys ever get to actually DRIVE your 3rd gen, or do you spend all your free time working out all the little problems? (like I do......)
