Default 305 build up.

So i have 89 camaro 5.0 and i'm going to put a cam in it and port and polish the heads and getting newheaders and manifold and carb which i already got edelbrock 650im going for a good street/strip combo but more of a daily diver.
and i dont know wat the max size of cam i can put in it.
i've seen the post 325Hp 305 and i didnt no if the came they put in that was a mild one or a bigger one?
Help or suggestions of what you have done to a 305 would be nice.

The real hold-back on the 305 is the heads. They are a swirled intake design that were designed for low RPM torque and better gas mileage. You plan on adding a lot of other items to help the engine breathe, but the heads will still be suffocating it. Because of the runner design, those heads fall flat pretty much past 3500 RPM. No porting/polishing you can do is going to change the casting restrictions. If you plan on spending time and money on anything, plus since street/strip is your goal, then a good set of aftermarket heads, or 305 H.O. heads will help wake it up.

the best advice i can give you is to call the COMP CAMS help line.they will tell you the best set up for you.you can get a good amount of power and torque out of a 305. the trick is to have the good set up. you diffently don't want toOVER cam the motor. it is easy to do. a mild cam for a 350 will be a little more aggressive for a 305. look at your heads.find out the specs on them.some 305 heads have enough room to drill-out the intake valves.that will help you to get the heads to breath.doing this will help you get more power.you could have a great cam for the car, sounds great but if it doesn'tbreath good ,it not going to runup to its full potential !! when you call the cam help line, ask them abouta complete kit. CAM,LIFTERS, SPRINGS,RETAINERS ANDLOCKS. you will have tochange your stock springstobetter springs so you will not coil-bind. if you don't change your springs you could wipe out the new cam.

i am building a 305 now for my k5 blazer. the bottom end is stock[not borred], a comp xtreme 4x4 cam 432/453 lift, 305 HO head, [shaved, ported, poished,
intake valves drilled out to 194exh 150 manley valves] performer intake and 650 holley carb. motor will have about 300 hp and about 310 to 320ft/ibs tq.
the HO heads have a very small chamber for them.about a 58cc and about a 185 runner before they were ported.

350 heads most likely will not be a good choice.you need to stay with a small chamber, like the 305 heads have.if you go with a head set up that has a bigger chamber, the motor will make less power.what you could do is try to find a set of 305HO heads 416 or 601 casting or get a set of vortec heads with a small chamber [62-64cc] .

i would because every little bit you can do like that will help you.it will most likely help you run better up top. if you up grade the stock valves to something swirl polished and machined it will help the flow too.
