Default 1989 Camaro RS Steering Column Repair

Hello All,

I have a 1989 RS with a tilt-column in need of repair, due to an attempted auto theft...

basically, the collar on the back side of the column is all busted up as is the housing in front of it that holds the ignition switch, signals, etc...

I bought one of the haynes manuals from autozone but it appears to be taking to many things for granted about what one needs to know about disassembling the column down to this level...

I did a bunch of googling and found a few how to's for other columns but still not enough info to help me get mine disassembled far enough to replace those two collars and whatever else is jacked up on the inside...
A couple of those links let me to this forum, but none appeared to go that deep either...

I have managed to get past using the steering lock plate puller etc, I have the ignition switch removed, but I can not seem to get the rest of it disassembled far enough to get to the busted out plastic collar on the back of the column...

anybody have any how to links or photos of how to get this dang thing apart? on these 3rd generation camaros, without the airbag in the column?

Thanks in advance.

I could explain it too you and give you all my tricks I have come up with but this should be much more clear than how I can explain it.

Of course while you have it apart go far enough to make sure the four torx bolts that are comon to come loose are tight. that hold the last part of the tilt area

In all honesty, it is MUCH easier just to stick a new column in there. You can get one fairly cheap from the junk yard or online and you can stick it in there in no time.
