Default Rear Main? '80 Z28

Quick question.. how hard is the rear main to replace while keeping the motor in chassis? Do I need a 1 or 2 pc? It's a 5 year old 305 with a 4 spd tranny.

Thanks.

Never tried this job on an f body but i did it many years ago on a mid 70's monte carlo fun job what we did was unbolt the motor mounts unbolt the tranny from the motor and we had to raise the motor up to get enough clarence to do the job. i think it would've been easier to just yank the motor.
also are you sure this motor is really only 5 years old i'm not too up to date but i think the standard 305 has been out of production longer than that. if the motor is newer than an 80 like you say it should be a one piece seal i believe although i'd double check that. either way if you have the means i would say yanking it is the way to go.
good luck and keep us posted.

That's what I thought. My guess is that the previous owner to the lady I'm buying from rebuilt a 305 for it? I guess I'll just buy both the 2 pc and 1 pc since they're ~$8 and go from there. I'll be buying this next weekend if I can talk her down a few hundred bucks, since she wants $2000 and it needs new paint and interior.. I want this for a resto though, so we'll see.

Thanks.
