Default What's my (friend's) car worth?

My friend has an '81 Z28 that he is considering selling and is trying to gauge potential interest in the car and current market conditions. It has approximately 7000 miles on the odometer and is in pristine condition. I'm including a few non recent pics and a copy of an appraisal done in early 2009 (some items edited to remove personally identifiable information). All original documentation is available.

Hard to say, I'd take it to a Barrett Jackson or Mecum auction and see what happens.
Not many available with such low miles, set a reserve close to that appraisal and hope some collectors get in a bidding war over it.

well original shape plays a huge role in a car like that ,if its all original with the low miles i would say value could well have gone up ,if its been restored an there is no bondo hideing under what looks like a new paint job at some point an some other thing under the car ,if its all numbers matching unrestored gives it more value ,they will only go up with time ,the year being 81 last of the 2 gen ,not as rare as the early 2 gen cars ,but could have value on the factors i mention, still then will be a long time before they come close to a 70,nice gold series car,it could be some time before they get up there near what a early 2 gen would, its the kinda car a guy wants to go to auction an get a deal on ,check with the mentioned places ,

I am a little confused, in your post you say 7000 miles but in the picture the Thousands spot has a zero. 7,000 Vs 70,000 is a huge difference in value. A all original car with 7k on it would attract high end collectors. One with 70k will not. A 7k version could be worth 20k if it is mint. and 70k version is mint shape is 10k. Of course on both those estimates that is towards the top and the value will come down with defects or unoriginal parts. Keep in mind the high end buyer want a car that will score high at a show. This means any nut or bolt that is not original will come right out of the value. Replaced: exhaust $1000 radio $250 right off the top. Any spots of rust or worst repaired rust will hurt more.

These cars were worth more 7-8 years ago then they are now. An appraisal 2009 would be useless now as that was around their high point in value.

Edit
I read the appraisal, if it is truly a 99 car and speedo is 10k then it should be around 18-20k car. The jump past 10k hurt it. Keep in mind these appraisals are for replacement value. Buying a show car is expensive in a time crunch also selling one in a time crunch can hurt it also. It can easily take a year to find a full retail buyer and selling one as a private seller hurts. Most high end collectors want to deal with dealers because there is so much BS out there. With a car like this consignment to a high end dealer is not a bad idea. He will know collectors and other dealers who have collectors. In this industry there are more fakes then real, even appraisals like this are being faked. Collectors tend to be busy people and they assume the high end dealers have weeded out the fakes.

Sorry guys, been away for awhile. As for the speedo reading, this is a Canadian car hence it is in kilometers. Right now it is at about 11k km's, so just under 7k miles. Someone mentioned the exhaust being replaced, it was not. The car is 100% unrestored and the pics posted, while a little old, are just about a perfect representation of how the car looks today. The only regret my friend has was the dealer applied undercoating for which he lost a point in the appraisal. There were some items replaced when new - tires, shocks and radio. All parts were stored and are in new condition and the radio installation done with extra factory door panels and console so as not to cut into the ones on the car. With very little effort it can be returned to as it left the factory. My friend has been in contact with RK motors and they are of the opinion it's the type of car buyers are looking for - original and unrestored. If anything comes from those discussions, I'll post here.

Edit. As a side note, this car being Canadian has the 350 V8 and 4 speed, a combination not available in the US.

well then sounds still like a nice car i would hold it for awhile an see what happens ,get another appraial done for 2017 ,but gorn knows car values pretty well, again it comes down to how much some one wants it an wants to pay,i would say 10 more years or less would see values going back up ,the point for undercoating makes no sence to me,but like gorn said anything can effect vale that not stock, sound like it would have more value in the us or another place as well
