Default True 1980 Z28?

Beside the VIN. How can I tell if it's true Z28?
It's a Van Nuys car. I know they didn't have 350 in Cali and the 1980 Z28 must have 350 CU but I understood that the fact the car was built in Cali doesn't make it California car. California car stands for cars that was sold in Cali not been build there.

There nothing that can not be faked. An original RPO sticker would be nice. Read through the below. Things like steering ratios is something some people miss when faking a Z. Z28 strip code my be the real tell.

Look at the trim tag, bottom row, to the left of the plant batch code (1XXXXX). If it's a Z28, there will be an "8" there. A Norwood Ohio car has different codes and placements on the tag, but that code is "Z28".

I don't have the trim tag since it's not the original hood
the vin number starts with 1P87LAL which I understood means its a Z28

Trim tag is on the fire wall next to the brake booster not the hood.

Vin number never defines the model options. Normally the vin only has 2 number to define the body and on Camaros that will be one number to say its a coupe and the other will be F for the F body. Sometimes you can get lucky on the Z28 or an SS and the engine code is a Z28 or SS only option which would prove the car is an original Z.

VIN Number Decoding | How To Read Vehicle Identification Number Opps that is 1981 up.

Edit:
1=Chevy
P=Camaro
87= 2 door 4 passanger Camaro
L= (350 motor) That's the winner, the only number that really matters.
A=1980
L= Van Nuys CA

Yes, the L engine code is for a 350 Z28. For further trim option info, check the trim tag which is screwed to the top of the cowl on drivers side, in line with the hood hinge. Older models, like mine, had the tag riveted to the firewall.

Pull out the back seats completely, and you might find the build sheet. I couldn't believe it when I found mine in my 80 Z about a year ago, so there's a chance it's still in your car.

LOL Actually it's on my job list for today. I'm going to pull out a lot of interior parts. So I'll check it.

Do you have the build sheet? And I would check under the drivers seat as well.The build sheet will have Z-28 printed all over it.
