Default Shifter/transmission on 78 (problem)

Just fixed the shifting problem where there was not enough cable to shift but now the shifting cable for the ground shifter has to much slack and is not shifting the gears . i shifted from park to L1 and i moves the transmission from park to reverse(1 gear).

I don't really know what your saying. Can you post a pic?
Please be alittle more vague next time. There was an exploded view of a shifter on here a few days ago. Searh the old threads and find that, then you will have a better idea of how it is supposed to look.

Park to L1??? That's all the way from Park, through reverse, neutral, Drive, @nd, and into L1???? Sounds impossible to shift through 5 points and only move 1 notch. Are you sure you're describing this correctly?

Fixed it now, but yes now, there seems to be too much compression for my engine to even crank.
It starts to rotate but the fan rotates only about 1/100th of a rotation and then bounces right back to where it was. My friend thinks it is the compression but i think it may be the starter.
Every once in a while it'll rotate a little more and it'll just make a sound like it's trying to but it's unsuccessful.
I'll try to produce a video if necessary.

Start with the basics. Pull the plugs and see how it cranks. If it's still slow or wont crank, then it's a bad starter or battery. Try a jump start then to eliminate the battery.
If it cranks with the plugs out, then it could be compression, but that doesn't usually change and get higher. You might have a timing issue, so mark the distributor location on the manifold, then try turning it CW or CCW until it either fires or cranks easier.
Has this car been sitting for a long time? Give us some history, so we've got a better feel for what's wrong. A cylinder full of liquid can do the same thing your car is doing, which could mean a gas leak, or coolant leak. I've seen engines locked up from a bad head gasket, or a bad fuel pump and carb.

I agree with the hrydro lock theory. I would have to be one hellva motor for a stock starter not to spin it. Something like 13:1.
