I have a 80 Camaro Berlinetta T-Top VIN # 1S87HAN542103. I was wanting to know if anybody can tell me something bout the Berlinetta version of the Camaro an tell me something bout the one I have?

I am looking at doing a Z hood & fenders an looking into adding Z & Ralley options to the Berlinetta what would be some good options to add to it? Another thing I am going to use this for a daily driver. The car came with a auto trans but now when I got it back there is no trans in it. Would a 4 speed manual trans from a Z be better for MPG? An I was told I should go with a 305 with 350 heads for better MPG over a 350 engine. Would the 305 with 350 heads an a 4 speed manual be good on gas? I heard I might get 18-20 with that combo is this true? I am currently driving a 09 Saturn Aura XR that gets 18-20 MPG.

 

It doesn't matter which of those trannies you have. There all 1:1 in the end. No way in hell your gonna knock down 18 mpg. The bone stock one in HotRod last mont got 11.

 

I'd keep it an auto and go with a 700 or 200 for better highway mileage. That's the only way you'll increase mileage with a tranny.

 

ok so what would I need to do to increase the MPG on this car? I am not looking for a high horse car just a fun one & cheap to drive. This is the only reason I went with it cheap to get it on the road an cheaper on gas than the truck. An on the 700 & 200 trans were can you get them at an which one between the two would be the best to go with?

 

Lots of ways to get better mileage, but not really cheap ways. Question is what are you willing to spend, and when will the return make that expenditure start saving you money at the pump?
A 700R4 would be my choice, and they are available everywhere. Start checking your local Craigslist.(I see them around here all the time) Every tranny shop sells them, or buy one new from several online sellers. Or maybe your local wrecking yard if they'll guarantee it.
Local builders sell them for around $650 rebuilt, but I see them listed as "good used" for $200-$300 often.

 

I am looking at going 4 speed manual with 305 high output an see how that does. I just want something easier on gas than my 74 F250 crew with 390 & 4 speed manual with granny gear.
