Default 1969 4 speed oil leak, after jacking front end up

I jacked up the front and have a small oil leak dripping from the rear trans support, it is too clean and thick for engine oil and smells more like gear oil.
I just bought this car and it just had a new motor installed.
What should I do or check?
Thanks

The tail shaft seal is leaking at the slip yoke on the driveshaft, and jacking up the front end angled the trans back, raising the oil level against the seal. See if it still leaks when driving. If so, you' ll need to remove the driveshaft and replace the seal.

Or try the Lucus oil for the trans it is suppose to swell the seals --worth a try but bet the drip goes away when you drive it tho!!

One last thing to check is the tail-shaft bushing. See if you have excessive play in the front yoke of the drive shaft. If it's worn excessively a seal won't fix it.

Power steering fluid will swell trans seals. A pint or so is all you will need. It will work for a while. Obviously, your best bet is to find the source of the leak and fix it. As mentioned above, if its the trans tail seal, remove the drive shaft and replace the seal. You can do this with the trans in the car.

If the slip yoke that fits into the rear of the transmission has a grove wore into it you will need more than a seal. I have used a speedy sleeve for repairing the grove on many occasions with good success.

Don't know if the OP is going to check back in, but don't use a snake oil additive to fix a leaky slip yoke seal, it will affect the internal seals of the trans as well. Just fix it the right way.

Default OP reply

The car has not leaked any oil sitting level and now that the temps are below 100 I plan on driving it some more and get the car up in the air and do some looking around.
The Camaro had a new crate motor installed just before I bought it and my mechanic brother in law thinks that maybe a seal got nicked and the oil is sitting in the bell housing. I drove it 290 miles last Sunday to a Corvette show at Arrowhead Chevrolet and it ran fine with no smoke or smell.

New question, the Camaro is a 350 290hp, Edelbrock intake, headers, 4 speed and 12 bolt rear end. The car seems really powerful for 290hp.
At 60 mph I'm running at 3000 rpm, do you think with this info. I have a 4:11 rear end gear?
Thanks
Robert

Either that or 3.73's. If you tell what size tires you have, the answer can be changed from a guess to a certain one, since tire diameter has a bearing on the speed/rpm ratio.
