I am looking to possibly purchase a 67 SS clone but am a bit concerned with the engine that is in it. The engine code reflects a big block 402 engine from a 1972 truck that only produced 210 hp. How is that? Anyway, it has definitely been modified and such but still? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to it with various pics and description. Thanks a lot!!

That 402 actually had more than 210 h.p. Starting in 1972, engine h.p. was rated "net" (as equipped in the vehicle), prior to that they were rated "gross" (no power dragging accessories attached). You can't compare apples to oranges, not to mention whatever else was done to the engine, performance wise.

 

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'm not looking for a super fast car or anything but was just thrown off a bit by a 402 producing 210 hp. Do you think this engine would be comparable to say a 1969 Camaro 396 listed at 350 hp? Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm a newbie and want to make sure I do my homework. The TKB code also shows to be a 1971 310 h.p. rated 402. Since that's pre-smog numbers, that should give you a pretty good idea of what it was capable of out of the box. A performance cam has been added, and who knows what else, so you could be close to your 350 h.p. hopes.

 

Thanks again but the dealer did tell me it said 1972 so I'm pretty sure that's what it is. They said you can smoke the tires for as long as you want in first gear so I guess that should be good enough for me. Just seems odd why they would put that engine in a Camaro. Any other input you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

 

Big blocks are torque monsters, so you shouldn't be disappointed about how she jumps out of the hole, once the tires hook up.
Why put a truck 402 in a Camaro? Could be that's what the owner just happened across, or that BB truck engines can be cheaper or more plentiful than one that was out of a performance car.

 

All great information!! Amazing how much I have learned over the past couple weeks. I always thought a 350 was a 350 and a 402 was a 402 at least stock that is. I've always been a BMW guy but have so much appreciation for Camaros now I don't think I want another modern car. Camaros are awesome!
