"it won't start"? Engine cranks over but no fire, or it doesn't crank over at all...click, click?

Check to make sure you have good solid ground connections; battery to block, block to body, body to frame (or any inter-connected combination thereof). Might as well check the positive connection too. Also make sure the wires to the starter are shielded, or are as far away as possible from the exhaust. Heated up wires makes for more resistance. You can also check with a volt meter at the starter both when hot and cold to see if the "start" wire is still carrying 12 volts.

And the water probably runs down and douses the starter to cool it off some. Then yeah it's the headers, still making the starter too hot. You might want to try putting on a starter heat wrap.

may also try getting a better battery, like a optima red top. Also take some timing out of it to ease its mind. Bigger gauge battery cable is a plus too..help throw the volts at it. Good Luck
