I would got a Muncie 4 speed if you want to convert it to a stick,Thats what came with those cars from the factory. You can go the wrecking yards,Swap Meets and or the aftermarket.Or a combination of all three for parts.Easy swap.

What kind of budget are you talking and what torque numbers is the Big block putting down? The are not any economically friendly gearboxes out there that can handle more then 400 ft/lbs of torque. 400 ft/lbs is a pretty weak 454. With most Standard transmission the case itself is the weak point and they can not be made to be much stronger then stock.

GM used the Muncie M22 behind their big blocks but they are far from economical. These are the correct transmission for anyone building a SS clone so there are 3 buyers for every transmission out there. Even the M22 is only good to 500 ft/lbs.

There are some aftermarket option but they are not going to be cheap The tremec TKO-500/600 can range in price for $2000 to $2500. Keep in mind that is just the transmission you will still need the clutch and all the other parts.

The most common standards you see at swap meets are the T-5's and older saginaw's. Neither of those can hold up to a mid strength small block.

Oh I was all wrong, you already have a BB and doing a trans swap.
M21/22 or Super T-10 if you are going 4 speed.

I would not go with a 4 speed.Unless you plan on changing the rear end gears. I have 67 that had a Muncie, 4.10 in the rear. I hated it. At 60MPH I was turning almost 3000RPM. I couldnt drive it down the freeway. Get at least a Tremec 5 speed overdrive or a 6 speed out of newer Camaro or vette . I'm in the process of installing a 6 speed Manual right now.

Can you make a thread for that? I have the below 67 4 speed and a spare T-56 from a LT1. I am curious what all is involved.

I'm about half way thru the swap. I should be done in the next couple of weeks. (I can only work on it a little at a time due to my job). Soon as I get done I will post a parts list needed to do the LT1 and instructions.

That would be awesome, I was thinking of pulling the motor to fix the rear main drip this summer might be a good time.

Thanks
